Goodbye K.C.

My oldest cat, K.C., had to be put down yesterday.

I got a call from my mother yesterday evening saying she was unable to move that night (phoenix time), just like our previous oldest cat, Madonna, was like when she had to be put down. K.C. fought liver cancer for 3 years and also had thyroid problems. She’s been off the medication for 2 years though, because for the first year she was unable to keep food down. It came down to the decisions: Keep her on meds but unable to eat; or just let natures take it course. Suprisingly, she held up for 2 solid years until her little body gave in with out medication. Much longer than expected even with medication.

I got her when I was 5 years old for my birthday from the Humane Societies kitten room–she only had 6 days left before she would have been put down because of overpopulation. She was perched in the corner on one of the massive scratching posts and would meow at anyone who passed by, but never played with the other kittens. We picked her. That part of her never changed. You could be anyone, even a stranger, and she’d talk and be extremely friendly with you. Two of her littlers we kept, and the 4 remaining cats we have our her first two litters. My mother said they were all in the room with her when she was dying yesterday, and now seem to be distraught and confused.

There was only 2 and a half weeks before I fly back out there. It seems I’m a bit too late to see her.
